The Nikon Coolpix P5000 is a lot more expensive than the Nikon Coolpix P5100 at a starting price of $730. This, despite a lower pixel resolution of only 10 megapixels compared to the P5100’s 12.1 MP. However, the Nikon Coolpix comes with a lot of whistles that can compete with the unchallenged Canon A640.
This camera has several attractive features for the hobbyist who may want to take his photography to a new level. It boasts of the lens-shift vibration which provides image stabilization to the camera to reduce blurs caused by camera motion. It is also capable of getting good shots even under low lights.
The Coolpix P5000 comes with a 3.5x optical zoom and a 4x digital zoom. An auto and manual focus and exposure and a 2.5-inch LCD display. It also allows you to capture video with sound and has a 26MB Secure Digital Storage.

The Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital ELPH is a small and compact camera but at a price tag of only $382 it’s well worth it. This camera has great image quality and just the neessary features you will need to get a good shot.
This 7,1 megapixel camera with a 3x optial zoom has an optical viewfinder and a 2.5 inch color LCD screen which allows you to view your shots in two ways.
The Digital ELPH is capable of direct printing and has PictBridge support. It has pre-installed modes for those challenging Indoor, Fireworks, Underwater and Night shots.

If you have just shifted from the point and shoot to the more sophisticated DSLR then the Canon 1000D Digital Camera is a good choice. It is beign marketed by Canon as an entry level camera but it still boasts of great features that are reminiscent of the 450D like high ISO noise reduction, Live View previews as well as JPEG and RAW file formats.
The good news is that the Canon 1000D is more affordable compared to the 4500 at a price tag of $699.99. It boasts of auto and manual focus capability, works on a DIGIC III processor and has a 2.5 inch LCD display. You can add more storage space by opting for a higher MB SD/SDHC card.
This camera may look bulky in photos but it is really lightweight at 450 grams and measures 126.1 x 97.5 x 61.9 mm.

The Olympus FE-310 is an 8 megapixel camera that’s great for budget conscious shoppers who want a quality but reasonably-priced camera. For $150 max you get a high resolution camera with a 5x optical zoom.
The Olympus FE-310 camera guides you through your photography adventures as it provides 17 scene modes that allow you to get good shots even when faced with difficult situations. You can do this even without tinkering with your camera’s aperture, shutter speeds or whatever it is that you do not know. Plus you get to preview your shots with the 2.5 inch LCD display.
The camera’s 20.5MB internal memory is however short if you want to experiment with your shots but you can always opt for the xD-Picture cards. Better yet, use the USB connector to transfer your images to your PC or to online storage sites. The video out port also allows you to share your images via television.

The Canon Powershot A650 IS is a sequel to Canon’s A640 and while old model already responded to the requirements of hobbyists who want a point and shoot camera that can get them good shots, the Canon Powershot A650 IS is a step forward to the right direction indeed.
The A640 is hard to duplicate so Canon thought of adding more pixels, rushing for the 12 megapixel resolution. The A650 IS also boasts of the image stabilization feature which avoids blurring and the ever-present camera shake problem.
It also has a 6x optical zoom, 4x digital zoom and a 2.5 inch swivel LCD display to preview your shots. A 32 MB digital memory for storage is included in the package which may not be enough if you get photos all the time but you can replace it with a 1GB or higher digital memory storage.
